Why, he changed his name to Sananda Maitreya in 2001 after a series of dreams and moved to Italy. Duhh.
But seriously, he did. And he’s still active on the scene. You can cruise over to Sananda’s web site (I can’t help but conjure up the image of Sanjaya) and see what he’s been up to.

I always thought Terence was cool and wondered what became of him. He has some pretty groovy tunes on his site. Any idea why he moved to Italy?

While I always enjoyed Terence Trent D’Arby’s music, his ego and public persona was his downfall. I’ll have to go give “The Hardline…” a listen. It’s been awhile.

When I was in high school, my friends and I used to sign TTD songs in harmony (I was in a high school for the arts, it’s how we rolled). I find his arrogance annoying but the guy was fun to sing to.

jazz – His bio says he moved from L.A. to Munich, Germany in 2001, where he started his own label (Sananda Records) – he then moved to Milan the following year and got married. Not sure why he moved to Milan – but i”ll throw my best guess out there: for a woman!

RE his arrogance… NO KIDDING!!! Do you remember the (infamous) Rolling Stone interview he gave… He said, “This is the last interview I’m giving for __ years.” I don’t think I ever heard another interview with him… And that was about 20 years ago!

TTD is underrated in the r&b and pop world. A multi-instrumentalist, great vocalist, and also a wonderful songwriter. But as others have mentioned, his ego is the reason he’s underrated. Christ, at the height of boomer nostalgia in the late 1980s, he proclaimed that Neither Fish nor Flesh was going to be better than Sgt. Pepper!
I had tickets to see him in Pittsburgh a few years ago, but he canceled on the day of the show. Still a little miffed about that one!

“Sign Your Name” got some heavy airplay in Miami growing up. Moreso than “Wishing Well”. Nice post of a somewhat forgotten artist.

The last album of his I got was ‘Wildcard’ which I really liked. Glad to see he has some newer stuff, now I must get my mitts on it!

I saw that mess on Terrence changing his name and I was like too — WTF??
I do respect an artist creativity but if I had not actively sought out where he was or doing, I probably would not have never known as you are telling now.
Much appreciated.
