The Ramones in London: the spark that lit the fire

The British punk explosion of 1976-77 can pretty easily be traced to one night in London: July 4th, 1976. That was the night the Ramones came to town. It was their UK debut, opening for the Flamin’ Groovies at the Roundhouse in Camden.

In attendance were current and future members of the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Buzzcocks, and the Damned, among countless others I’m sure. The quality is pretty bad, but it’s still amazing to listen in on such an important night in music history. A 35 minute set that shaped the future of music. Pretty sweet.

It’s still downloading, I can’t wait to listen to it. You’re absolutely correct – Brit Punk started right that night. Thanks for yet another bootleg classic!

Just downloaded, and have to wait to listen, as I’m currently committing the halcyon Springsteen Roxy show of 1978 that you uploaded for me (and for all, last August) to CD. Damn, is my place going to have the roof shaking tonight! Thanks for making this available, Pete.

As an aside, and because I can’t help evangelizing, Joey Ramone wanted for many years for the Ramones to play a Sparks song live, but they never did. A shame, too! Sparks is currently in London performing each of their 21 albums, one each over 30 nights, with about 7 down. Each is being webcast live, and it’s great, great fun. Sparks is an aquired taste for many, and happily, Joey, like Morrissey, got it.

Back to the Ramones, it’s almost spine tingling to imagine the future gods on hand that night. What a great piece of rock history.

Well Dave, as great as this Ramones show is, if you truly want the house shaking tonight, you need a great quality Ramones show. And that is Rock & Roll College. Oct. 13, 1979 at Northwestern University. So grab it & rock it!

    This is an amazing gift.

There seems to be some problems with some of the songs – both in the zip and on the site.
    Songs 3,4,5,6,8,11,12,13,15 & 16 throw the error:
” Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file.”

This happens when I click the mp3 on the page and when I try to play the file from the zip.

I was at the gig and it was really quite amazing – though at the time we didn’t realise at the time what an important event it was! Only afterwards did we realise that it was the start of Punk in the UK. If I’d known who was in the audience that night as well…! I managed to meet Joey Ramone after the gig and he gave me a small baseball bat (Beat On The Brat) – he threw some out into the audience – a promo item from Sire Records. I have some photos I could send in (or send to whoever wants copies – Joey on stage and the Ramones getting out of a battered Jag to go in for the sound check… Finally, (and I’m being a bit stupid here) but how do I download the bootleg of the gig? I’d love it as a momento!! Cheers Dx
