Friday Five

The Friday Five: August 14, 2009

Watch the shuffle, everywhere, keep looking! Keep watching the shuffle!

Friday Five : ˈfrī-(ˌ)dā,-dē ˈfīv : On the sixth day of every week I hit the shuffle button on my iTunes and share my five and drop a little knowledge and insight for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, sometimes there isn’t. Sometimes we have guest, but most of the time it’s just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up your media player of choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments.

The Five:

The Band – “Up on Cripple Creek”  (from Greatest Hits, 2000)

I’ll admit that I’ve heard this track covered more often than I’ve heard the original.

Phish – “The Divided Sky” (mp3) (from 2009-03-06: Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, VA, USA, 2009)

In this case, I’ll let the music do the talking.

John Mellencamp – “Jack and Diane” (from The Best That I Could Do 1978-1988, 1997)

Pop Quiz: What unique quality does “Jack and Diane” have in common with Prince & The Revolution‘s “When Doves Cry”?

Jellyfish – “Will You Marry Me” (mp3) (from Fan Club, 2002)

I recently acquired this fantastic collection of demos, outtakes, b-sides and live material from what could easily be my favorite band of the early 90’s. As evidenced by my last.fm chart, I’ve been on a steady diet of Jellyfish ever since. “Will You Marry Me” is easily one of the band’s strongest unreleased tracks and was only performed live.

DJ Shadow – “Mashin’ on the Motorway” (from The Private Press, 2002)

I’ve been a fan of DJ Shadow from the first moments of Entroducing…. in 1996. In the years between solo outtings he released an early singles collection and worked as part of the U.N.K.L.E. project but nothing could compare to what he does best

Side Note: The first person to correctly guess the “Pop Quiz” question gets a copy of Assembly of Dust‘s Some Assembly Required.

Thanks to an 80s playlist generated by Genius, based on “Don’t You Forget About Me”:

    1. INXS – Need You Tonight
    2. Pet Shop Boys – West End Girls
    3. Til Tuesday – Voices Carry
    4. Cars – Drive
    5. Simple Minds – Alive and Kicking

Nothing but the hits this week, but I was okay with that.

Time for me to get back into the Friday five,

    1. Ryan Adams – “Voices” from “29” (2005) I love Ryan Adams and have just about everything he’s ever done, both with Whiskeytown and afterwards, but this song isn’t one of my favorites.

    2. Adam Puddington – “Deer in the Headlights” 2008? I’m not sure where I got this from, or who the artist is, but the song’s pretty good. I think I need to look him up on Amazon or iTunes.

    3. Nathan – “The Boulevard Back Then” from “Casserole EP” (2007). The Winnipeg folk/alt country band, not the rapper. Whenever I try to look them up on anything, I get a lot of results for Nathan the hip-hop artist.

    4. Alejandro Escovedo – “As I Fall” from “A Man Under the Influence” (2001)

    5. Sarah Jarosz – “The Shankill Butchers” from “Song Up in Her Head” (2009). I seem to have a huge collection of bluegrass covers of non-bluegrass songs. Particularly hip-hop and R&B, although this is neither. I think the Decemberists’ music actually lends itself pretty well to a bluegrass interpretation.

Funny… just watched the bonus DVD of Purple Rain last night. John Cougar is being interviewed by Mark Goodman at the Purple Rain premiere, just gushing about Prince. Beside the two songs, you can still find common ground between John & Prince. Two guys small in stature with extra-large egos.

    1. “The Day we Fell Apart”, Kelly Clarkson, “All I Ever Wanted” 2009. How embarrassing!
    2. “Underneath It All”, No Doubt, “Rock Steady” 2002.
    3. “Blue Moon Revisited (Song for Elvis)”, Cowboy Junkies, “The Trinity Session” 1988. This helps make up for the first song.
    4. “Digging Your Scene”, Ivy, “Guestroom” 2002. Perfect pop song.
    5. “Respect” Otis Redding. Love it!

Ha – I initially read the question as what line do Jack & Diane and When Doves Cry have in common, had to look it up, and was confused.

    1. Megadeth – Rust in Peace…Polaris
Feel like this has come up before. Honestly, I so rarely listen to this stuff anymore. But every once in a while I like to revisit middle school.

    2. Kid Cudi – TGIF
I like this album well enough. Really liked it at first, but it got stale pretty quick.

    3.Tribe Called Quest – Ham N Eggs
This was (and I guess still is) one of my theme songs in college.

    4. MJ – I Just Can’t Stop Loving You
It boggles my mind that this was the first single from Bad, and hit #1. Likewise with Thriller and The Girl is Mine (though the latter peaked at #2).

    5. Public Enemy – Who Stole the Soul?
Fear of a Black Planet has a special place in my heart as not only the first PE album I bought, but also the first hip hop album.
