Ha – I initially read the question as what line do Jack & Diane and When Doves Cry have in common, had to look it up, and was confused.

1. Megadeth – Rust in Peace…Polaris
Feel like this has come up before. Honestly, I so rarely listen to this stuff anymore. But every once in a while I like to revisit middle school.

2. Kid Cudi – TGIF
I like this album well enough. Really liked it at first, but it got stale pretty quick.

3.Tribe Called Quest – Ham N Eggs
This was (and I guess still is) one of my theme songs in college.

4. MJ – I Just Can’t Stop Loving You
It boggles my mind that this was the first single from Bad, and hit #1. Likewise with Thriller and The Girl is Mine (though the latter peaked at #2).

5. Public Enemy – Who Stole the Soul?
Fear of a Black Planet has a special place in my heart as not only the first PE album I bought, but also the first hip hop album.

1. “The Day we Fell Apart”, Kelly Clarkson, “All I Ever Wanted” 2009. How embarrassing!
2. “Underneath It All”, No Doubt, “Rock Steady” 2002.
3. “Blue Moon Revisited (Song for Elvis)”, Cowboy Junkies, “The Trinity Session” 1988. This helps make up for the first song.
4. “Digging Your Scene”, Ivy, “Guestroom” 2002. Perfect pop song.
5. “Respect” Otis Redding. Love it!

Funny… just watched the bonus DVD of Purple Rain last night. John Cougar is being interviewed by Mark Goodman at the Purple Rain premiere, just gushing about Prince. Beside the two songs, you can still find common ground between John & Prince. Two guys small in stature with extra-large egos.

Time for me to get back into the Friday five,

1. Ryan Adams – “Voices” from “29″ (2005) I love Ryan Adams and have just about everything he’s ever done, both with Whiskeytown and afterwards, but this song isn’t one of my favorites.

2. Adam Puddington – “Deer in the Headlights” 2008? I’m not sure where I got this from, or who the artist is, but the song’s pretty good. I think I need to look him up on Amazon or iTunes.

3. Nathan – “The Boulevard Back Then” from “Casserole EP” (2007). The Winnipeg folk/alt country band, not the rapper. Whenever I try to look them up on anything, I get a lot of results for Nathan the hip-hop artist.

4. Alejandro Escovedo – “As I Fall” from “A Man Under the Influence” (2001)

5. Sarah Jarosz – “The Shankill Butchers” from “Song Up in Her Head” (2009). I seem to have a huge collection of bluegrass covers of non-bluegrass songs. Particularly hip-hop and R&B, although this is neither. I think the Decemberists’ music actually lends itself pretty well to a bluegrass interpretation.
