Friday Five : \ˈfrī-(ˌ)dā,-dē ˈfīv\ : On the sixth day of every week I hit the shuffle button on my iTunes and share my five and drop a little knowledge and insight for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, sometimes there isn’t. Sometimes we have guest, but most of the time it’s [...]

For the second time in just 6 months, the Phoenix area was treated last night to the bare-bones rapid-fire majesty that is the Gaslight Anthem. The guys have been touring their asses off in 2009, with two swings around the US, and a successful European festival season highlighted by a couple of guest appearances by [...]

Thanks to a post on Slowcoustic, I happened upon a cool A.A. Bondy version of “I’m On Fire” today (who’ll be at Modified in Phoenix later this month). I had to share.
Hear: A.A. Bondy – I’m On Fire (mp3)
Which made me seek out the Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon singing the same tune at a performance [...]

If you or any of your friends question the quality of new music today, grab them (or yourself) by the ear and take ‘em to see The Gaslight Anthem when they come to your town.
Tuesday was our first 100 degree day here in the Phoenix area, and the temp hadn’t cooled inside the small n’ [...]

I got a note in late September alerting me to a band from New Jersey called The Gaslight Anthem. In the note was mention of Springsteen and the Clash. So naturally, I went to eMusic and downloaded ‘The ‘59 Sound’ right away. I have to be honest, I struggled with it for a while. The [...]

While a mass of humanity took in Fergie’s (disappointing? gasp!) set across Town Lake at the Tempe Music Festival, we smart ones were filing into the Marquee Theater to take in D.C. / Brooklyn artist Citizen Cope. It was billed on the venue’s web site as “an evening with no support”. But I was [...]

I’ve been meaning to post this song for a while now. And it’s Michael’s great Alice Smith post that spurred me into action. Alice had been opening up for Citizen Cope on his recent tour.
Cope is the pseudonym of Clarence Greenwood, and I’ve been enjoying his last couple of albums – 2004’s The Clarence [...]

This tune is kicking me in the pants right now. Citizen Cope has that satisfying blend of soul and a rootsy acoustic vibe that I’m enjoying more and more with each listen. “More Than It Seems” just plain grooves, in a slow, pleading sort of way.
Memphis born, and reared in Texas and Washington DC, Cope [...]

I’m not a fan of Scottsdale, but Martini Ranch actually sounds really good. Seen a couple shows there and never been disappointed.

I’ve actually only seen a local band play at M.R., and that was 10-12 years ago. Glad to hear you like the venue. Gotta be better than that sweat box the Clubhouse… you going to Gaslight again, Kev?
