Friday Five

Friday Five : ‘frī-(,)dā,-dē ‘fīv : On the sixth day of every week, I hit the shuffle button on my iTunes, share the first five tracks and thought for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, occasionally we’ll have a guest, but most of the time it’s just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up your media player of choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments.

Editor’s Note: Due to a recent hard drive crash, my library is a bit compromised at the moment. Today’s five comes courtesy of my iPod which, not surprisingly, has some holiday music that was skipped along the way.

The Five:

1. “She’s Got a Way” by Billy Joel (from Greatest Hits, Volume I & Volume II, 1985)

2. “Twice as Hard” by The Black Crowes (from Shake Your Money Maker, 1990)

3. “Cousin Mary (alternate take)” by John Coltrane (from Giant Steps, 1960)

4. “Sara Smile” by Hall & Oates (from Greatest Hits: Rock ‘n Soul, Part 1, 1983)

5. “Burning Down the House” by Dave Matthews Band (from 2008-08-09: DMB Live Trax, Volume 15: Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, WI, USA, 2009)

What’s on your shuffle today?

Tequila-fueled Friday night, so if this doesn’t make sense, you’ll know why. I’m going to regret this evening’s actions tomorrow. Right now, though, I don’t care. Let’s listen to some music …

    1) W.A.S.P., “Animal (Fuck Like a Beast).” Just fucking sleazy, almost comically so. No, wait, no “almost” about it. Blackie Lawless is hilarious to me; how anyone could find him even remotely dangerous is beyond me. Somewhere right now, Tipper Gore’s nether regions are getting inexplicably moist.

    2) REM, “Man-Sized Wreath.” Great track from Accelerate. Very funny juxtaposition with W.A.S.P.

    3) Rolling Stones, “Gimme Shelter.” One of my favorite songs, ever. Just the spookiest stuff you’ve ever heard. “War, children, it’s just a shot away.” I once read that tank crews in Vietnam used to bolt 8-track players in their tanks and play this shit while going into battle. Can you believe that? It’d get them psyched up to do what they had to do. I can’t imagine having a soundtrack for a kill-or-be-killed situation, but if I were to be in such a situation, I don’t know if “Gimme Shelter” would be my choice of theme song; it’d freak me the fuck out. I’d play it for the enemy, though. Really loud.

    4) LL Cool J & Boyz II Men, “Hey Lover.” Talk about a shift in mood. Love this, though. Reminds me of Aries Spears imitating LL, saying he didn’t even need a woman to turn him on — he’d just stand in front of a mirror chest-naked and turn himself on. Perhaps he’s singing this to his reflection. Fave line: “Now I don’t wanna violate your relationship / So I lay back in the cut with a crush / That’s a trip.”

    5) Def Leppard, “Photograph.” Fuck YEAH!!! How awesome was Pyromania? Fucking thing is 27 years old. Twenty-seven. Let that sink in. This has one of the greatest guitar solos ever (the second one, not the one-note thing that comes out of the first chorus, though that’s cool, too).

“T” Plays It Cool – Marvin Gaye
    Overkill – Men At Work
    Warakurna – Midnight Oil
The Choice Is Yours – Black Sheep
War at 33.3 – Public Enemy
