New Florence Avenue-Dave Alvin. I am a huge Dave Alvin fan but, for whatever reason, I really did not recognize this song. My loss. It is a great tune.

Rapture-Blondie-Live. One of Blondie’s worst songs, and one of the worst versions.

Sorry-Willie Nile. One of those songs that you don’t even know you have, but a catchy tune. I played it twice.

Cruel to Be Kind-Marshall Crenshaw-Great version of the great Nick Lowe song.

Miss the Mississippi-Bob Dylan. Dylan’s vocals are in rare form on this version from the Bootleg series.

So, I went 4 out of 5 today. If I were a baseball player, I would be in the Hall of Fame!

    1) Stan Getz & Oscar Peterson, “Pennies From Heaven”

I love, love, love Oscar Peterson. My favorite jazz pianist, with Marian McPartland coming in second.

    2) The Knack, “Lucinda”

I’ve never heard this song before. That’s why I generally don’t participate in Friday Fives — I have too much music on here that I’ve never heard. Anyway, I remain unimpressed with it.

    3) Joshua Radin, “Winter”

I like this song but I can’t listen to more than two Joshua Radin songs before turning him off. Every song is the same breathy whisper. Radin should do an album with Iron & Wine. I’d just buy the first track, since I’m positive I’d be asleep before the second.

    4) Joan Osborne, “Axis: Bold as Love”

Joan gets some shit for her cover album, but I like most of the tracks on there, including this one.

    5) Beck, “All In Your Mind”

I have a few Beck albums but Sea Change is the only one I listen to regularly.

The Cure, “Let’s Go to Bed.” The Cure, like the Smiths and Depeche Mode, is a band I’ve grown to enjoy as I’ve gotten older, even though I was in college at the height of their power, and, as such, they should have been right in my wheelhouse. I think the problem was the people I knew who were Cure, Smiths, Depeche Mode fans then were people I could not fucking stand. Not to say that all Cure, Smiths, and Depeche Mode fans at the time were assholes — just the ones I knew. Plus, at that point, I was drunk as often as I could be, and these bands do not make music for drinking (with the exception of the Smiths’ “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now”).

Led Zeppelin, “Trampled Underfoot.” I once had a friend who thought this was Zeppelin’s version of the Doobie Brothers’ “Long Train Runnin’.” I thought he was nuts at the time, but I can hear it now.

Sammy Hagar, “There’s Only One Way to Rock.” From the Live-Hallelujah record he did with the Wabos a few years back. I love this fucking album. It is a no-bullshit rock and roll live album. The only weakness is the vocal of Mona, the bass player. She’s a monster bass player, and a really distracting presence at the mic. If you’re drinking enough, though, it really doesn’t matter what she’s doing; there are enough straight-up RAWK songs on this bugger to keep you going. Fucking thing shoulda come with a shot glass.

Dire Straits, “Your Latest Trick.” I had the Brothers in Arms LP, which started this song with the saxophone figure that begins the song proper. Then, I heard my cousin’s CD, which featured a minute-long muted trumpet thing PRIOR to the sax. How cool, I thought, too bad this CD thing is just a passing fad. Love the song, either way. Love the use of the word “bereft,” which you just don’t hear that often in a pop song. I would also like the Ickmusic record to show that, as this song played and I wrote about it, my family gathered by the television to watch the new version of “We Are the World.” And I turned the volume on the Dire Straits track up to 7 on a 10 scale, to block the Satanic tones from my ears.

Genesis, “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.” The live version from Seconds Out. Just today, Peter Gabriel confirmed he would not attend Genesis’ induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now, I think the Hall of Fame is fucking useless, but I think Gabriel is a dick for denying his fans the opportunity to see him play with Rutherford, Collins, Hackett, and the other one. These are the same fans that have kept you in riches for 40 years; throw ’em a bone. Shit, Pink Floyd did it (at Live 8), so why can’t you, Petey? Too busy promoting your boring, drumless new record? Fuck you, pal.

      Dude,

Right ON with your bad self. I love your Five picks, and agree with you on the Gabriel stuff – it’s shameful that he is not going to be there. With the exception of the Zep track, this Five reads like it could have come off of my hard drive. No offense to Zep, I just don’t have any sitting on the hard drive currently – still a bit burned out on them from to many years of hearing ’em all day every day (working in radio).

The Saturday morning five, because I was too preoccupied on Friday:

    1. “Crossroads” by the Turtle Island String Quartet.
    2. “In State” by Kathleen Edwards from “Back to Me” (2005) Love this.
    3. “Superstar” by Nina Nastasia from “Run to Ruin” (2003)
    4. “Promises Made” by Dan Fogelberg from “Nether Lands” (1977). I’m already imagining the sneers and taunts from other Friday Five participants. I don’t care. I own everything the man has ever recorded and saw him in concert four times. A great songwriter, and the most amazing acoustic guitar player I have ever seen or heard.
    5. “Canopies and Grapes” (demo) by Emmy the Great

(And I also have a whole bunch of music in my iTunes that I don’t recognize.)
