The Friday Five: April 2, 2010

Friday Five

Friday Five : ‘frī-(,)dā,-dē ‘fīv : On the sixth day of every week, I hit the shuffle button on my iTunes, then share the first five tracks and thought for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, occasionally we’ll have a guest, but most of the time it’s just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up your media player of choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments.

The Five:

This week, I’m letting the music do the talking!

“You Really Got Me” by Van Halen (from The Best of Both Worlds, 2004)

“When I Come Around” by Green Day (from Dookie, 1994)

Apparently Prince doesn’t want anyone to hear this next tune. Probably a good thing, I’m just sayin’…

“Home” by Bria Valente (from Elixer, 2009)

“No Ordinary Love” by Sade (from The Best of Sade, 2001)

“Heard It on the Radio” by The Bird and the Bee (from Interpreting The Masters Volume 1: A Tribute To Daryl Hall And John Oates, 2010)

What’s on your shuffle today?

1 The Conjuring – Megadeth Album: Peace sells.
Oh ya, early Megadeth; raw, hard and loud. When people ask what speed metal is, this album is on the list.

2 Black Sabbath – Black Sabbath – Album : Black Sabbath
First off, that’s just fun to say “Black Sabbath, from Black Sabbath, from Black Sabbath.”
The back story is great for this song “Osbourne gave Butler a book about witchcraft. He read the book and placed the book on a shelf before going asleep. When he woke up, he claims he saw a large black figure standing at the end of his bed. The figure disappeared and Butler went to get the book, only to find that the book was gone. He then told Osbourne, who wrote the lyrics to the song.”
Tony Lommi shows why he gets the respect he deserves on this one.

3 Holy Wars , The Punishment Due – Megadeth Album: Rust in Peace
So I guess my MP3 player is on “METAL MODE” fine with me. I agree with Dave “Killing for religion
    Something I don’t understand”

4 Barracuda – Heart – Album: Little Queen
One of those songs you know right from the first riff. Grab your Air Guitar.

5 House of 1000 Corpses – Rob Zombie – The Sinister Urge
(Still in metal mode I guess)

Ok, so I knew when I came across this site this week I liked it right away. I also knew my music taste was probably little off center from most of the people who post here. Then this song pops up and proves me very right. But hey what can I say, I like it. If you listen to the “record groove sounds” at the end long enough, you get “Unholy Three” another good song.

Low Down Dirty Mean-Allman Brothers Band. Great blues riff. Great song.

Nausea-X. Exene on lead vocals. Ripping up the joint.

That Wonderful Someone-Patsy Cline. Patsy and the Allman Brothers were both on last week’s five. Her voice is in rare form here.

Help Me Shake It-Graham Parker. Great, great song. GP Tearing it up.

Superstar-Sheryl Crow. Not sure why this is on my iPod. Not something I would generally listen to, but not awful.

    1. “Elvis” by Pat Green from “Wave On Wave,” 2003. Kind of surreal song about what it was like to be the King. Green is a decent country singer, and the song is kind of a goof.

    2. “Hats Off (To The Stranger)” by Lighthouse from “One Fine Morning,” 1971. Album track from the folks who did “One Fine Morning.” Kind of fun.

    3. “Lighten Up Your Load” by Tony Furtado from “Deep Water,” 2008. Just got this one the other day, so this is a first hearing. Kind of a chant thing from a guy better known for instrumental work. Odd.

    4. “The Legend of John Henry’s Hammer” by Johnny Cash from “At Folsom Prison,” 1968. Folk song from one of the great live albums.

    5. “Ghiore Dos” by the Bulgarian State Radio & Television Female Vocal Choir from “Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, Vol. 2,” 1982. I have this odd penchant for Bulgarian choral music, with its odd intervals and melodies.

    1. The Rolling Stones – “Let It Bleed” – I cheated. I felt like starting the day with the Stones. The Shuffle will take it from here.

    2. Run-DMC – “Jam-Master Jammin'” – Moving from Let It Bleed to the King of Rock album. I’m okay with that.

    3. Aaron Copland – “Rodeo: Hoe-Down” – Switching gears once again. An American classic.

    4. Mick Jagger – “Throwaway” – Ahh! My favorite song from Mick’s second solo album, Primitive Cool.

    5. Tom Waits – “Clap Hands” – From Rain Dogs. Solid 5 if ya ask me.

Iggy Pop & Kate Pierson “Candy”

Avett Brothers “The Ballad of Love and Hate”

    Somebody’s Darling “Farewell”

    Nappy Roots “Down n Out”

    WOW, this is good!

    1) Rusted Root – Airplane — this was a late 80s band I was into for a short while. Good musicians, songwriting was a little lackluster.
    2) Peter Gabriel – Dont Give Up —- what can I say ? If you have a chance to see live – dont miss
    3) Rual Midon – Sunshine —- great album – great sonwriter – this guy could be around a long time
    4) Yo La Tengo – Cherry Chapstick — I like all the stuff from this band. Great sound
    5) Madonna – Jump from Confessions on a Dancefloor. — she always has the right production and dirction. Rarely a bad album in the last 15 years.
