Black City

I signed up for a Rdio subcription.

$9.99 per month for unlimited web and iPhone app streaming of shitloads of music, new and old. It really comes in handy when I’m cruising around the blogs and Twitter, reading Rolling Stone & Billboard, etc… and I read about an album, an artist, or a song that interests me. No problemo, dial up Rdio and, more times than not, it’s there for the listening.

Case in point. Twitter sometime a couple of days ago. I follow Canadian indie hip-hop beat whiz Cadence Weapon. A few days ago, he tweeted the following:

That was enough for me to head over to Rdio to check out this album by Matthew Dear – whom I’d never heard of. Loved the vibe. Catchy, creepy, funky electronic weirdness. Certain parts had me likening it to a modern day Kraftwerk, with the electro beats and strange, low chanting and singing. There are all sorts of cool effects woven into this album, and I look forward to letting it sink in more.

My favorite is the second track, “I Can’t Feel”. What a groove! Definitely something Kraftwerk-y here, isn’t there?

[Turn up. Headphones if possible. Over and out.]

Pete…question for you on Rdio & streaming. How much more has streaming become part of your listening? Are you listening more or is this stealing time from playing itunes, etc? Do you use it primarily for discovery?

Funny you should mention that, Judd. I’ve been noticing how lately, I’m spending just as much time on Rdio as I am on iTunes. I find I’m using Rdio both for discovery AND spontaneously dialing up tunes I already know – and own.

I can certainly feel a change taking place – like how it’s very likely that one day we’ll access all of our music from a cloud. The concept of music ownership could seriously change. I mean, if all music is accessible from any device in your life, why waste the time downloading a MP3 or buying a CD? Very interesting time in music….

Thanks, Pete. I’ve been on the fence on how to replace LALA.com. You give it your seal of approval? If you do, then I’ll give it shot, sign up for Rdio, and have you to blame it on your if the wife asks me about it. Ha! You rock my friend.
