Ft Worth Blues

In all my posts about Mr. Steve Earle, I’ve never shared this video, for some reason.

It’s “Ft. Worth Blues”, Steve’s tribute to Townes Van Zandt written after Townes’ death on New Year’s Day 1997. The studio version serves as the finale to Steve’s excellent 1997 album El Corazon.

As for this video, I’m not certain of the particular event/program, but it’s obviously a gathering of singer/songwriters to pay homage to Townes. Most affecting other than Steve himself is a crying Nanci Griffith next to him. “Ft Worth Blues” has always been my favorite Steve ballad – up there right next to “Goodbye” – and this performance is simply a masterpiece – gut-wrenching and gorgeous at the same time. Just a beautiful piece of work.

That shot of Nanci…that is why I love music so damn much. Thanks for pulling that one out of the pile, Pete.

This is from a tribute to TVZ on Austin City Limits in ’97 or ’98. Guy Clark, Emmylou, Rodney Crowell, Cowboy Jack, Nancy Griffith, Lyle Lovett, Peter Rowan, Willie Nelson all there in a guitar pull. Oh and J.T. Van Zandt as well. One of my favorite programs, if you can find a bootleg of it.

Should’ve figured it was ACL. Thanks Tim. One of my wishes is for ACL to offer up a video archive of their shows. Pipe dream I know, but how cool would that be?
