A Dead Giveaway – Europe ’72 & More

It’s been a long time since I’ve hosted a contest and it’s been way too long since I’ve featured the good old Grateful Dead. And wow, do I have a cool bundle of swag to give away this time around.

Earlier this month, Rhino released Europe ’72: Vol. 2, a follow up to the almost 40 year old Europe ’72, which captures one of the Dead’s most legendary tours (not to mention Ron “Pigpen” McKernan’s very last tour). There was a lot of great music from the tour still hanging around in the vaults all these years, and lucky for the us, Dead archivist David Lemieux got his hands on them, and gathered 20 songs for Vol. 2.

The result is a collection of twenty tunes from the 22-show tour, ranging from “Bertha”, “Next Time You See Me”, and “Greatest Story Ever Told” to the always epic “Dark Star” > Drums > “The Other One” from the May ’72 Bickershaw Festival in Wigan, UK (outside Manchester). Plus a whole bunch of other Dead classics from different stops along that European road (the track list is down below).

So, let’s get to the goods. Yes, I’ve got this great new release for one lucky winner. But – how do they say it? – that’s not all!!

To the victor goes the spoils, which are:

I’m telling you, I’m envious of whoever gets this. It’s sitting here staring me in the face, begging to be ripped open and explored. Buuut I’ll be good and pass it on to one of you fine people.

It couldn’t be easier to enter – just leave a comment below, and after a week, I’ll select a winner. If you’ve seen the Dead, I’d be interested to know, what was your one favorite show or your one cherished memory? If you didn’t catch them before Jerry’s untimely passing in 1995, just go with stream of consciousness… favorite song/show? Era? Does Donna Godchaux’s backing vocal stylings from their 70’s shows make your skin crawl, or does it do something for you? (Sorry Donna, for me, it’s the former.)

I’ll pick a winner and notify him or her by email on Friday, October 7th. Make sure to leave your email address in the field below. It’s not shared with the masses, I just need a way to get in touch (once). This giveaway is open to anyone in the US or Canada.

Good luck Deadheads and non-Deadheads alike!!

Never got to see the Dead but my favorite show is probably 8/27/72 aka The Field Trip. So many of the performances on here are in the discussion for best version ever (Bird Song, Dark Star, Playing In The Band, China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider, He’s Gone). The Dark Star also always brings to mind a specific afternoon I spent in El Retiro while I was studying abroad in Madrid. It was just me, my iPod, and a book and I remember when the Dark Star came on I just lay down in the grassy area behind the waterfall that abuts the Palacio de Cristal and listened to the whole thing. Good times.

Regretfully I didn’t get to see a live show. Jerry is the reason I recently picked up a guitar for the first time, at the age of 34. Fire on the Mountian is definitely my fav. This giveaway is epic and would be a great addition to my tiny collection. Thanks.

I went to a number of shows at chicago’s soldier field for many summers, stopping one summer short of Jerry’s last show. Always wished I could travel back in time to witness just one of these 70s era shows.

My first show was 1 month before Brent’s passing. I was hooked then and have been ever since. Best summer ever=92 summer tour. Steve Miller Band opening for The Greatful Dead.

This is sweet – count me in.

Europe ’72 has always been a favorite of mine.   Recently I started a marathon going through the Europe ’72 Box.   Currently up to 4-16-72 Aarhus and enjoying every minute.

It’s like they are three bands in one.   Country & Western, Psychedelic rock and roll and Blues / Soul / R & B with Pig.   Looks Like Rain with Jerry on Pedal is the shit.

Favorite show that I saw 10/05/94 – went backstage tripping face….locked myself in the backstage bathroom by accident…

Saw the Dead i9/20/91 at the Boston Garden…though we listened almost exclusively to the Dead in college (University of Maine) I only saw them the one time…but we talked about our dream setlist on the ride to the show and got almost all the ones we wanted, including the ONLY Help-Slip-Fire the band ever did. We won. Now I want to win again!

First time I saw them live was when I worked security for the Dead’s 1973 show in Cleveland and was hooked. Working concert security thru the 70’s got to see them and Jerry when he came thru solo many times. Like they said, “What a long strange trip it’s been…”

Wow! That’s a suhweet give-away, Pete. Not sure I’m even worthy of it, though. My wife (girlfriend, at the time and I decided on the spur of the moment to drive to KC to see the Dead (this was the summer of ’91). We drove 5 hours to the show, only to realize there were absolutely no tickets available. It didn’t matter, really… We could hear the band playing and had a wonderful time strolling through the parking lot with all the other Dead Heads. Good times, man…

  • Witchnose

Saw ’em live in ’79 – the only thing I remember (apart from them being really good) was that I danced. Probably the only time in my life. The whole place danced. It’s a great memory.

Not eligible for the prize, great as it is, but saw the dead at the Rainbow in London in March ’81 and at Wembley arena on Halloween 1990, when they finished with Warren’s Werewolves of London – Jerry’s voice was shot, but the atmosphere was great. The Americans in the crowd were all in Halloween gear and had come to partty. My abiding memory was of an American girl refusing to wait in line to use the Ladies, and using the urinal next to me in the gents. Far out!

I saw the Dead back when, and I mean WHEN. My first two shows, I believe, were at the Fillmore East in NY and the Berkeley Community Theater in CA. I was on the first row in Berkeley (sitting in Marmaduke’s seat, as it turned out – didn’t know it at the time since the New Riders were the opening act) and I took some photos. I’ll see if I can attach one (there are a few).

  • Brent

Saw Jerry’s next to last show at Soldier Field. While I have seen better Dead shows, this one stands out due to the fact that Jerry didn’t seem to be doing so well. So I guess the most memorable things about this show were the strange version of U.S. Blues at the end and the amazing grilled cheese sandwich in the parking lot after the show.
