A Nudge in the Right Direction

It’s been a while since a nudge toward some sites and posts that have piqued my interest. Here’s a good batch…

• Captains Dead is a fine blog. You should really check out a full Faces concert from 1970, part one and part two.
• Sir Jeff and his merry gang of bloggers are keeping Popdose at full steam ahead. Check out the collaborative Tweener Mix Tape post; Matthew breaks down Prince’s Batman album; and the latest installment of “The Popdose Guide to” features the Pogues! Go and be edu-ma-cated.
• You know, Paris Hilton’s response video to McBush’s campaign ad isn’t really that annoying. Paris actually got a chuckle out of me. I’m - well - shocked!
• Stereogum has video of Wilco’s “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” gig at Wrigley Field the other day.
• Aikin is going ballistic at Licorice Pizza with a multi-part series featuring tons of Led Zeppelin studio sessions, outttakes, etc. He’s three parts into it so far. A one. A two. A three.
• And - hey wow, Ekko posted a 1988 Joe Strummer show on Berkeley Place, with his then backup band the Latino Rockabilly War. Hold on, must download now. *click* Okay, I’m back.
• The Vinyl District is always ripping some great LP tracks. Check out these early reggae selections.
• Non-music: In these times, we all need a good laugh at the expense of others. For a daily dose, be sure to make Hot Chicks with Douchebags a stop!

• First of all, start the weekend right over at Gonzo’s Music-0-Rama with a vintage Stevie Wonder show circa 1974. Talking Book era baby, can’t beat it.
• Green Alien Chick has landed, and is unloading great boots left and right. The Police at the Pinkpop Festival, 1979. Elvis Costello and the Attractions at the same festival. And if you want to rock your your shit this weekend, it’s 1981 live Iron $@!# Maiden!
• Popdose interviews Al Jarreau! And they dig deep into one of my favorite guilty pleasures, Al’s “After All”.
• Paying tribute to a sad loss this past week, Steve has live soundboard Jeff Healey at Maybe We Ain’t That Young Anymore.
• Berkeley Place posts some early Boss (1974). I’ll be catching the Boss in Anaheim in a few weeks. My first show of the Magic tour. Yeeowww!
• If you haven’t seen the video of Janet Jackson “teaching” Larry King how to dance, check it out. Good God Larry, you are WHITE. You’ve got less soul than Don “No Soul” Simmons!!
• Oh you haven’t met Don “No Soul” Simmons before? Wait no longer…(from Amazon Women on the Moon)

• Revisit some tunes from that classic 80’s movie we all love, Valley Girl, over at The Vinyl District.
• Did you miss Popdose’s Weekend of Wham!? For shame! Catch up on all the Wham! goodness here and here and here and here and here!
• Ben gives us a Southside Johnny / Little Steven show from ‘93, and a Bobby Womack Appreciation Day over at A Deeper Shade of Soul.
• And finally, Matt at Ben loxo du taccu gives us Mauritius Week - Mauritius is an island country in the Indian Ocean, not far from Seychelles, where my wife is from.

• Do you want an early Jeff Tweedy acoustic show? Berkeley Place has got you covered with a Dec. 29th, 1994 show with special guest Jay Bennett.
• Itching to hear Nelly Furtado join Anne Murray for a studio version of the Monkees’ “Daydream Believer”? Thought so. Check out Hi-Fi Heart.
• Aikin at Licorice Pizza has some live Kiss from their ‘79 tour rehearsal, and some Janis Joplin from the 1969 Texas Int’l Pop Festival.
• Steve at Maybe We Ain’t That Young Anymore is in full on P-Funk discovery mode, and posts a nice Parliament show from 1978 at the Howard Theater in D.C.
• New Blogger Alert! Java John has a new music blog, Spill the Beanz (http://spiltbeanz.blogspot.com). Here he is taking a look at David Bowie’s Pin-Ups album. Off to a good start, Java John….
• There’s always a plethora of cool shizz goin’ on over at Popdose. Let’s see… Jeff looks back at the New Monkees, Mr. Malchus reveres Jeff Buckley’s version of “Hallelujah” with a very personal touch (such a great song), and the Popdose Guide to the Call.

It’s 5 posts full of cover versions from the likes of the La’s, Cat Power, Afghan Whigs, and even Jim James of My Morning Jacket doing “I’m on Fire”! • DJ Prestige passes along a sweet mix… It’s Flea Market Funk’s Canned Funk & Soul Mix, vol. 21.
• Over at Popdose, Tony K. schools us, with the Popdose Guide to John Mellencamp. Then, Jon Cummings gives us the Popdose Guide to Nancy Griffith.
• My buddy Ace of Hidden Track fame passes along a hilarious video of Zack Galifianakis interviewing Michael Cera. Definitely worth a look.
• Music for Robots posts a great old school mix by - um - Radioclit. Check it out.

• Did you miss Radiohead’s New Year’s Eve performance of In Rainbows? Current has it all here.
• Steve at Maybe We Ain’t That Young Anymore brings in the new year with a 1989 U2 show.
• Conquest! Aikin takes a look and listen to the White Stripes’ latest single over at Licorice Pizza.

• My buddies at Hidden Track take a look at the 10 Least Dangerous Rock Stars (#’s 4 thru 1 are priceless).
• Matt kicks down some Zambian acoustic guitar action at Benn loxo du Taccu.
• Led Zeppelin’s complete BBC Radio sessions, anyone? That Truncheon Thing’s got you covered here (part 1) and here (part 2).
• Eliot at Wired’s Listening Post likes the new Pixies tribute album, including Mogwai’s cover of “Gouge Away”.

• Finally (and not music related), Dusty at Pork Tornado (aka Salami Tsunami) is one of the most entertaining writers I’ve come across on the web. Check out his latest post here, where he talks about his new job and an ugly abscess in his tooth as only he can. He doesn’t post that often, but they’re always worth the wait.

A Nudge in the Right Direction

It’s been an odd day of departures in the music world today. First the news that Kevin DuBrow of Quiet Riot was found dead in his Las Vegas home on Sunday. Then not an hour later the news that Casey Calvert of Hawthorne Heights was found dead on the band’s tour bus on Saturday. Now I’m not generally the superstitious type, but if I were Amy Winehouse or Pete Dougherty I’d be taking the day off and hiding under the covers.

• My LastFM buddy Brian has a new music blog, and I think you should check it out. Small Things Stupid Packages debuted just over a week ago, and is off to a great start. Brian takes a look back at the opening day of the US Festival, 25 years later; delves into the music of Son House; and gives a sweet Spoon show from 2005.
• Ear Fuzz posts a couple tracks from the late great jazz pioneer, Joe Zawinul.
• Gonzo’s Music-o-rama enters the realm of Ethiopian Jazz with a look at Ethiopiques, vol. 4.
• Ben at Deeper Shade of Soul gives us a killer Flaming Lips show from ‘99.
• Hidden Track passes along a link to a shiteous new song from shiteous comedian Dane Cook and Ann Wilson’s latest Zeppelin cover.
