Earle’s new one is great – it more than makes up for the last, which I found a little flat. It had an agenda, which I have no problem with (God knows, my politics mirror Steve’s), but I thought it a little unmemorable musically. “Washington Square Serenade” stands with his best work as a thoughtful, melodic and lyrically excellent album; tough, yet in parts sentimental (his relocation to NYC and marriage to Ms. Moorer seem to suit him well).
