Friday Five

Ickmusic’s Friday Five: August 8, 2008

Keep That Shuffle Complexion.

So if you are reading this you clearly have been on the internet long enough to know that today 8-8-08 is the official beginning of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing, People’s Republic of China. And in honor of the occasion, I thought it only appropriate that we take part in the festivities with an Olympic themed playlist. So in the spirit of “One World One Dream” here is your playlist for this week’s Friday Five.

Tough on Dirt, Gentle on Olympics.

Match ANY of the following conditions

NAME contains One
NAME contains World
NAME contains Dream
NAME contains Games
NAME contains Flame
NAME contains Gold
NAME contains Silver
NAME contains Bronze

756 Tracks, not bad… (at Pete’s suggestion I’ve added the other medals)

Last week’s birthday celebration brought out a parade of everyone’s party favorites and served as the basis for some interesting juxtapositions across the genres, tempos, moods, you name it.

“The Theme Days of Summer” are coming to a close and as I mentioned last week I’m looking to give back to the faithful fivers so send your playlist ideas to michael at Ickmusic.com with the subject line “The Theme Days of Summer” and I’ll choose the best two to be featured in a coming Friday Five.

For those who have not joined in the Five, here’s how it works: … I hit the shuffle button on my iTunes and share my five with some words (and on occasion the song itself) for each track.

Then it’s your turn! You can play along with the themed playlist or just share the first five of your shuffle, either way the fun is in playing musical voyeur for the day.

Here are this week’s tracks:

1. Maceo Parker – Tell the World (from Funkcronomicon)

I love me some Maceo Parker, but this is not really the Maceo I know and love. Part of a brilliant overall record this is Maceo with Sly Stone, Bobby Byrd and Bootsy Collins performing a track from Maceo’s For All the King’s Men.

2. Earth, Wind & Fire – That’s the Way of the World (from That’s the Way of the World)

It has got to be hard being the song after “Shining Star”, no?

3.  Daft PunkAround the World (radio edit) (MP3) (from Around the World)

10 years on this track still makes me move my butt.

4. Dave Matthews Band – The Dreaming Tree (from Before These Crowded Streets)

From what I consider the bands magnum opus, this song stands as a testament to the power of music to heal. Written by bassist Stefan Lessard after the death of his infant daughter, the songs protagonist questions his faith in dealing with death while clinging to the perfect world in his mind (The Dreaming Tree). Lyrically and musically it’s one of the most beautiful and moving songs in the bands discography.

5. Otis Redding – I’ve Got Dreams to Remember (from The Very Best of Otis Redding)

This is a very good tune. My mother used to sing this. I love Otis.

So what’s got you going for the gold this weekend?

Well, I’m here on Friday afternoon for once, instead of lagging into the weekend . . .

One song for each word, given the limitations of my sorting capability:

    1. “One Toke Over The Line” by Brewer & Shipley, Kama Sutra single 516, 1970. Oh, lord, memories of my senior year of high school. I couldn’t have done better if I’d hand-selected it! A great oldie!

    2. “World Gone Wrong” by Bob Dylan from “World Gone Wrong,” 1993. A good track from one of the solid acoustic albums Dylan released in the ’90s.

    3. “Only When I’m Dreaming” by Minnie Riperton from “Come To My Garden,” 1970. This has an almost Latin feel to it, but like the rest of the record, it’s also soul and show’s off the late Riperton’s astounding range.

    4. “Games We Play” by the Hollies from “Evolution,” 1967. “If your mother only knew the games we play,” indeed! Quite the song for its time, with its winking acknowledgment that the kids were being quite naughty when they were left alone.

    5. “Fanning the Flames” by Taj Mahal from “Phantom Blues,” 1996. A nice blues from one of my long-time faves.

    6. “Mining for Gold” by the Cowboy Junkies from “The Trinity Session,” 1988. A sombre song to close on, but oh, Margo Timmins’ voice!

Out of 1210 tracks, I’m relatively happy with the first five songs on my list–unlike previous weeks.

    1. “Small World” by Judy Kaye from a 2001 production of Gypsy at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle

    2. “You Got Gold” by John Prine from “The Missing Years” (1991) John Prine makes me happy.

    3. “Silver Dagger” by Joan Baez from “Joan Baez”

    4. “Prisoner” by Greg Keelor from “Aphrodite Rose” (2006) More of my Blue Rodeo fixation.

    5. “Tombstone Store” by Birdie Busch from “Penny Arcade” (2007)

These last two probably weren’t what you had in mind when you included the word “one.”

I removed “one” from my list bringing my list from 756 songs down to 241.

    So here’s my Olympics 5 – 2 worlds, 2 dreams, and some gold….

    1. “The Man Who Sold the World” by David Bowie. Bowie fans will scoff when I say I first heard this song thru Nirvana’s unplugged version. The song is from 1970 but I think have the re-recorded version from 1995 (produced by Brian Eno).

    2. “Dreams of Children” by the Jam (1980). From a boot also from 1980.

    3. “Fool’s Gold” by Stone Roses (1989) – I only own this double A-side CD single (with “What the World is Waiting For”). I love the groove of “Fool’s Gold” – great rhythm / pulse / feel…

    4. “Creation Dream” by Bruce Cockburn, from a 1981 boot in Denver. The original is on Dancing in the Dragon’s Jaw, which I recently mentioned in a post. Love it. Love it. Love it.

    5. “It’s a Man’s World” by James Brown, from a 1973 boot called ‘Avalanche of FUnk”, live in Switzerland I think?

I ran into the same “one” issue and found that if I typed “one ” (with a space at the end) and iTunes was intelligent enough to understand that I only wanted the word “one”. Sometimes Apple manages to impress me with the logic they build into their products.

    Love me some friday 5

    1) Golden Years by David Bowie – This from the Changesbowie package. I would love to see him live. Hope he tours soon.

    2) Daydream Believer by The Monkees — Wonderful little pop song.

    3) Silver Bulletts by Ryan Adams and the Cardinals from Jacksonville City Nights. Ryan is the most prolific songwriter of the last 10 years in my opinion. This band live is a treat. This album on 180 gram vinyl with a great needle is yummy !!!!

    4) World on a String by Neil Young from Tonights the Night. Great band that is raw !!!!

    5) One has my Name by Jerry Lee from Anthology — I remember my dad always listening to this and having no idea that this song represented wrongdoing. Love me some Jerry Lee. Went and saw him a few months back and it is hard to watch.

    See ya !!!!1
