Friday Five

Friday Five : ‘frī-(,)dā,-dē ‘fīv : On the sixth day of every week, I hit the shuffle button on my iTunes, then share the first five tracks and thought for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, occasionally we’ll have a guest, but most of the time it’s just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up your media player of choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments.

The Five:

Editor’s Note: This week’s Friday Five comes courtesy of the iPod and was listened to in-between taking conference calls. The awesome side-effect was I went into each meeting with a smile as there wasn’t a stinker in the bunch.

“Take Me With U” (feat. Apollonia) by Prince & The Revolution (from Purple Rain, 1984)

“Suedehead” by Morrissey (from Viva Hate, 1988)

    1) “Don’t Waste Your Time” by Mary J. Blige and Aretha Franklin

Mary plays it cool, while Aretha is in showoff mode, which has been her default for the past fifteen years or so. Pretty much the same lyrical content as the recent Aretha/Fantasia collaboration, which was an unfortunate screamfest.

    2) “Pop Song ’89” by R.E.M.

“Green” gets unjustly ignored when people talk about great R.E.M. albums. “Stand” is kinda a guilty pleasure, but the rest of the album is really solid.

    3) “Still Would Stand All Time” by Prince

I’m still on the fence about whether “Graffiti Bridge” is a good Prince album or a merely mediocre Prince album. I haven’t heard this song in years-it’s better than I remember it.

    4) “She” by The Jacksons

Very funky new-jack track with an acapella, doo-woppy opening. Should have been a huge R&B hit-alas, was never released as a single. Randy might have been the second most talented Jackson brother.

    5) “My Love is on Fire” by Stevie Wonder

Decent track from “A Time 2 Love”-Stevie’s best album of the past thirty years. I know a lot of people don’t necessarily share that opinion!

Graffiti Bridge has only gotten better with time. “Question of U” and “Joy in Repetition” are both classic, and “Still Would Stand All Time” is one of my favorites. Sure, there are a few turds on there, but even “Elephants and Flowers” still kicks ass.

I swear, on any given day this could have been my shuffle.

    1) Hem, “Sailor.” Man, I love Hem. But you really gotta be in the mood for it, because it’s all slow and melancholy and zzzzzzz.

    2) Jellyfish, “Joining a Fan Club (Acoustic, Live)” Easily one of my most favorite songs absolutely ever. So complex, so well-produced, so full of perfection. My band has covered this song, with less-than-stellar results. It’s just so difficult, and yet sounds so damn easy coming from these guys. This acoustic version isn’t flawless, but illustrates the power of their harmonies, stripped from the production.

    3) Fall Out Boy, “Dance, Dance.” Parr, this is your fault for convincing me to check out Fall Out Boy. I like this song, but not as much as “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down,” which is just super awesome.

    4) Rilo Kiley, “Ripchord (live at Fingerprints).” I love More Adventurous more than any of the albums that came before or after it. This isn’t my favorite song on its own, but within the entire album, works well.

    5) Crowded House, “Locked Out.” I didn’t know much about Crowded House until a few years ago, but I remember hearing this song back in the early ’90s through some other means. I thought it was the No Alternative ’93 compilation, but nope, that wasn’t it..turns out it was <i<Reality Bites. Great song from a great group.

All 5 of these worked for me this week! How about that.

@Michael: “Joy in Repetition” is one of the 10 best Prince songs ever. Even if the rest of Graffiti Bridge was total crap, that song makes the album worth owning.

@Jason: You just jogged my memory about something! I’ve always wondered what Neil Finn was saying during that long backwards part towards the end of “Locked Out”! Off to Google I go…

    1. “Fortress” by Pinback from “Summer in Abaddon”
    2. “Drilling a Wire Through My Cheek” by Blue October from “Foiled”
    3. “Ave Maria, Op. 52 No. 6” by Franz Schubert from Fantasia
    4. “Travel Song” by Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin from “Broom”

Not a bad mix except that the classical piece in the middle is way out of place.
