Whatever Happened to Terence Trent D’Arby?

sananda1

Why, he changed his name to Sananda Maitreya in 2001 after a series of dreams and moved to Italy. Duhh.

But seriously, he did. And he’s still active on the scene. You can cruise over to Sananda’s web site and see what he’s been up to.

One of the things you’ll find is a link to a full 2010 concert in Basel, Switzerland, including this one, “It Ain’t Easy”…

This song is one of TTD’s biggest hits from his great debut, Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D’Arby, and takes top billing as my favorite TTD tune. Enjoy. And go show Sananda some love.

I always thought Terence was cool and wondered what became of him. He has some pretty groovy tunes on his site. Any idea why he moved to Italy?

While I always enjoyed Terence Trent D’Arby’s music, his ego and public persona was his downfall. I’ll have to go give “The Hardline…” a listen. It’s been awhile.

I remember he said or did something about twenty years ago and then he disappeared.  I think it had something to do with his popularity.

When I was in high school, my friends and I used to sign TTD songs in harmony (I was in a high school for the arts, it’s how we rolled). I find his arrogance annoying but the guy was fun to sing to.

jazz – His bio says he moved from L.A. to Munich, Germany in 2001, where he started his own label (Sananda Records) – he then moved to Milan the following year and got married. Not sure why he moved to Milan – but i”ll throw my best guess out there: for a woman!

    😛

No doubt, for a woman, Pete!

RE his arrogance… NO KIDDING!!! Do you remember the (infamous) Rolling Stone interview he gave… He said, “This is the last interview I’m giving for __ years.” I don’t think I ever heard another interview with him… And that was about 20 years ago!

    🙂

TTD is underrated in the r&b and pop world. A multi-instrumentalist, great vocalist, and also a wonderful songwriter. But as others have mentioned, his ego is the reason he’s underrated. Christ, at the height of boomer nostalgia in the late 1980s, he proclaimed that Neither Fish nor Flesh was going to be better than Sgt. Pepper!

I had tickets to see him in Pittsburgh a few years ago, but he canceled on the day of the show. Still a little miffed about that one!

The last album of his I got was ‘Wildcard’ which I really liked. Glad to see he has some newer stuff, now I must get my mitts on it!

I saw that mess on Terrence changing his name and I was like too — WTF??

I do respect an artist creativity but if I had not actively sought out where he was or doing, I probably would not have never known as you are telling now.

    Much appreciated.

    Loved his first album.

We can say whatever we like about TTD but we must agree on one thing , he falls under the title of one of the greastest artist of his time along with Prince, Sade and the sista who sung We gotta fast car.

The US music industry messed up MANY artists. Forcing them to act an image not natural to them.
And if they didn’t comply, their careers were destroyed or they had to leave the country to make it. Michael Jackson et al complained of this often!

Right on.  Josephine Baker, one of the richest, sexiest Black women alive would have starved to death in America.  she made most of her money in Europe.  Jimi Hendrix got famous in Europe first, then he was accepted in the states.  One the reasons he made it in the states was because at time, the United States was going through a revolution.  The hippie generation idolized him because he was so unconventional.  He was and still is worshipped like a God.  He is an American Icon of the Baby Boomers.

I was asking, What ever happened to Terence Trent D’Arby today and I found out. His smooth voice and great looks has remained one of my favorites. I will always listen to his music. Next time I am in Italy I would love to see him in concert.

He is so good looking and sexy.  I think that helped his career.  Maybe being told he was so handsome went to his head.

after hearing his song sananda should hang it up its awful.  go back to being terence trent pllllllleeeaase

  • Michelle aka Peaches

I really enjoyed Terence’s preformances and always what ever happened to him.  I thought he was just a one hit wonder.  But low and behold, he is back and his music is unique and fresh.  Thanks from Michelle

I remember there being some contraversy about him, then he suddenly disappeard.  Roling Stone wrote that he was the biggest cross over artist in Europe since Jimi Hendrix.  I really dug him back in the eighties when he and Michael Jackson were the only Blacks on MTV.  I am an African American female, who was attracted to his sensuality.  I thought he was very handsome with a nice build for a tall man.  He’s different alright, almost weird.  That what attracts me to him.  I seen him on The Apollo, his debut to the music world.  I wish he would perform back in the States.  He is so sexy.
On The Apollo they said he was from Harlem, New York.  All of a sudden, I’ve developed a new interest in him.  Why did he change his name?  It seems like his hiding from something.
