Nobody Knows (including me)

One of the neglected bands in my life has been Faces (and Small Faces before them). But thankfully, they keep popping up from time to time, reminding me to get my act together. Wohlman included this great track in one of his most recent transmissions (if you haven’t listened to one, you need to. Your musical horizons will expand). It’s a Ron Wood / Ronnie Lane composition that was included on the Faces album First Step. It was the first record after the breakup of Small Faces, and actually reads “Small Faces” on original pressings of the album. The lineup was Rod Stewart, Ron Wood, Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagen, and Kenney Jones.

This song has been around as long as I’ve been alive fercryin’ out loud (since 1970), and I heard it for the first time y-e-s-t-e-r-d-a-y. Great song, I recommend earphones. You’ll hear old Rod in one ear, and who I’m assuming to be Lane in the other. Am I right on that one?

Yep, that is indeed the late, very great Ronnie Lane in your left speaker. The heart and soul of the Small Faces and Faces. Get into his solo work, as well as “Rough Mix”, the album he did with Pete Townshend. Wonderful, timeless music. May he rest in peace.

Ick, nice post. Check out Faces “A Nod Is As Good As A Wink….to A Blind Horse”, one of the rockinest albums ever. Enjoy

Update….just pulled out the Faces cd referenced above…..WAY TOOOO MUCH fun for a Thursday morning! The opening chords to Miss Judy’s Farm are worth the price of admission! Check out the opening track on the aforementioned Rough Mix, My Baby Gives It Away. Grest stuff! Thanks for the gentle reminder.

I picked up their Greatest Hits (Good Boys When They’re Asleep) over the weekend. Haven’t had a chance to digest much yet – only listened once all the way through during a rare Sunday nap… but i will continue to delve! Best studio album = A Nod Is As Good As a Wink..?

Pete, my vote is in, if they made a better studio cd I haven’t heard it. Check Stay with Me, You’re So Rude, Memphis and Too Bad. I think these guys were having too much fun when they made this!?!? If you get a chance check out the cover shot. Would have liked to see this in person.
And just think, now we’re stuck watching Rod the Mods’ kids on cable.
