Friday Five

The Friday Five: August 7, 2009

Friday Five : ˈfrī-(ˌ)dā,-dē ˈfīv : On the sixth day of every week I hit the shuffle button on my iTunes and share my five and drop a little knowledge and insight for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, sometimes there isn’t. Sometimes we have guest, but most of the time it’s just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up your media player of choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments.

The Five:

Jason Mraz – “Life Is Wonderful” (from Selections for Friends, 2006)

Originally from his largely (and criminally) ignored Mr. A-Z, “Life Is Wonderful” is a beautiful bit of alliteration.

Wilco – “It’s Just That Simple” (from A.M., 1995)

A fine country ballad from the bands debut.

Chet Atkins – “Steeplechase Lane” (mp3) (from Chet Atkins: Guitar Legend: The RCA Years, 2000)

Originally from the long out of print Chet Atkins Picks on Jerry Reed.

Estelle – “No Substitute Love” (mp3) (from Shine, 2008)

Complete with a tongue in cheek quote from George Michael‘s “Faith” this is pure pop bliss.

Bryan Adams – “Heaven” (from So Far So Good, 1993)

It’s not “All I Need” but it will have to do.

What’s up next on your shuffle?

  • Sans Direction

Stick McGhee and his Buddies, “Drinkin’ Wine” (Spo-Dee-O-Dee)”
The Byrds, “Oil In My Lamp”
Danny Gatton backing Robert Gordon, “Twenty Flight Rock”
    Emmylou Harris, “The Pearl”
    The Jayhawks, “Over My Shoulder”

  • Deb

    Gaslight Anthem, “The Backseat”
    The Cure, “Just Like Heaven”
    Bruce Springsteen, “Rockaway the Days”
    Matthew Ryan, “Hold on Firefly”
Jackson Browne, “Colors of the Sun”

  • Kristi

    1) Incubus – Martini
    2) Wyclef Jean – No Woman No Cry
    3) Van Halen – Dreams
    4) Paramore – Sunday Bloody Sunday
    5) Counting Crows – I’m Not Sleeping

(Incubus actually came up 3 times in my first 5, but that would not be very exciting, so I omitted 2)

PS – Wilco & Bryan Adams = Nice!

  • Anne

    1. “Famous” Puddle of Mudd
    2. “The Country Life” The Silver Seas. This album was originally released under the band name of The Bees. However, there was another band by that name, people were confusing them and so they rereleased the album the next year under the new band name of The Silver Seas.
    3. “Crying Over” Patty Griffin.
    4. “All Dressed In You” Kate York
    5. “Boys Don’t Cry” Kate York. Funny, I don’t have that much from her but two songs came up in a row. 3rd or 4th time that has happened today. Anyway, could not bear to eliminate this wonderful cover.

  • Pete

    1. “I Wanna Get Next To You” – Rose Royce. One of the smoothest slow jams everr. And it came out originally on the Car Wash soundtrack.
    2. “Stop Drop amd Roll!!!” Foxboro Hot Tubs
    3. “Flying” – The Beatles. Hey, these guys are pretty good
    4. “Soft & Wet” – Prince. Alternate version / demo from The Work. I’m getting pretty close to another phase when I listen to nothing but Prince for a week straight.
    5. “Jeru” – The Gerry Mulligan Quartet w/ Chet Baker. West Coast Jazz, baby.
