The Five:
“Nothin’ Comes Close” by Journey (from Arrival, 2001)
“Nothin’ Comes Close” is a perfectly serviceable bit of AOR that just seemed completely out of place in 2001. I always liked Augeri’s voice, though. He sounded like Perry enough when he had to, but had enough of his own identity that he didn’t seem like a puppet on the end of Schon’s hand.
“Someday I’ll Be Saturday Night” by Bon Jovi (from Cross Road, 1994)
Oh, it’s going to be like that, huh? I can’t say I care much for this tune. I recall thinking it was pandering when it was initially released.
“God” by The Smashing Pumpkins (from The Aeroplane Flies High (disc 3: Zero), 1996)
I’m beginning to question what I ever saw in The Smashing Pumpkins.
“Remember” by Bryan Adams (from Anthology, 2005)
I’m not going to lie: I kind of dig this song. This is Adams before he started growling his way through every damn song. He definitely has a knack for writing a hook that sinks right in.
“Outshined” by Soundgarden (from A-Sides, 1997)
One of the handful of Soundgarden tracks I actually like. You know what my favorite part is? The pre-chorus with Matt Cameron’s background vocal!

“Heaven” by Bryan Adams (from Reckless, 1984)
Oh, the melodrama! Now, I’d be lying if I said that I did love this song for every bit of its Journey inspired power balladry. Hell, the entirety of Reckless provided the soundtrack to my tween years.
Here’s a fun little bit of trivia: the drum part on “Heaven” was played by Journey’s own, Steve Smith.
“Get Over It” by Amy Petty (from House of Doors, 2010)
If you follow me on the twitter, you’ll no doubt already be aware of my deep seated love for Amy Petty’s songwriting and seductive voice. This record earned a spot among my favorites of 2010.
“Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” by Rupert Holmes (from Billboard Top Hits: 1979, 1991)
I really don’t care for Piña Coladas, but I love this song.
“Creep” by TLC (from Now & Forever: The Hits, 2003)
While I prefer the Afghan Whigs version, I have nothing bad to say about this track.
“O.P.P.” by Naughty by Nature (from The Hip Hop Box, 2004)
Seems like a great track to kick into the first Friday dance party here in the office.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – “Little Wing” (From Axis: Bold as Love, 1967)
While possibly cliché, this is my favorite Hendrix tune. Simple, soulful and beautiful, this is easily on my desert island song list.
Enuff Z’Nuff – “New Thing” (mp3) (from Enuff Z’Nuff, 1989)
Day-glo attire and pop-metal leanings aside, Enuff Z’Nuff were one of the most underrated power pop bands of the ’80s and ’90s.
Bryan Adams – “Heat of the Night” (from So Far So Good, 1993)
Does anyone truly dislike Bryan Adams? If pressed to name the essential ’80s records, Reckless would always be mentioned in the top 10.
Counting Crows – “Angels of the Silences” (from Recovering the Satellites, 1996)
I recall seeing the band on the Recovering the Satellites tour and how powerful this track is live. Adam is dynamic when he wants to be.
Bon Jovi – “Never Say Goodbye” (mp3) (from Slippery When Wet, 1986)
The ultimate prom song, I look at this record and wonder how it is that 23 years later this band is still flogging the same dead horse.

Originally from his largely (and criminally) ignored Mr. A-Z, “Life Is Wonderful” is a beautiful bit of alliteration.
Wilco – “It’s Just That Simple” (from A.M., 1995)
A fine country ballad from the bands debut.
Chet Atkins – “Steeplechase Lane” (mp3) (from Chet Atkins: Guitar Legend: The RCA Years, 2000)
Originally from the long out of print Chet Atkins Picks on Jerry Reed.
Estelle – “No Substitute Love” (mp3) (from Shine, 2008)
Complete with a tongue in cheek quote from George Michael‘s “Faith” this is pure pop bliss.
Bryan Adams – “Heaven” (from So Far So Good, 1993)
It’s not “All I Need” but it will have to do.

Ah Friday. The day most of us look forward to beginning at around 9:30 AM on Monday morning. The gateway to the weekend and the only thing standing between you and the release from the daily grind… I think that I can easily say for everyone, Thank God it’s Friday.
Friday also means it’s time for the Five. This week I struggled a bit with the theme as we head into the final stretch of “The Theme Days of Summer”. It hit me that we’ve covered a good bit of ground to date and that one thing we’ve not covered is direction. Furthering upon that thought the “Feng Shui” playlist was born.

Last week’s Olympic inspired theme saw everyone going for the gold and some bringing home the bronze. Everything from Dylan to Bowie to the Godfather of Soul made appearances (some more than once) to represent their home country and bring back the glory.
For those who have not joined in the Five, here’s how it works: … I hit the shuffle button on my iTunes and share my five with some words (and on occasion the song itself) for each track.
Then it’s your turn! You can play along with the themed playlist or just share the first five of your shuffle, either way the fun is in playing musical voyeur for the day.

1. The Rolling Stones – Beast of Burden (from Forty Licks)
Yes friends of Ickmusic, this is my favorite Stones tune. Actually it’s tied with “Waiting on a Friend” for the top spot. There’s something about the laid back soul side of Mick and the boys that resonates with me more than some of their more up-tempo numbers.
2. Donna Summer – Heaven Knows (from Gold)
I am surprisingly unashamed of having this disco-era gem pop up. Featuring Joe “Bean” Esposito (who you can find much more than you ever wanted to know about by paying a visit to our friend Jason Hare over at Popdose) this was a Number 2 hit for Miss Summer and was the last of her purely disco hits.
3. Bryan Adams – Heaven (from So Far so Good)
Did anyone else see Bryan Adams on Jimmy Kimmel Live! the other night? It was a far cry from the lackluster performance that he turned in at this year’s American Idol finale. He belted out “Summer of 69′” like it was 1984 all over again. This one brings memories of school dances and Saturday nights with Dr. John Barron on WSPK.
4. The Ohio Players – Heaven Must Be Like This (MP3) (from Skin Tight)
Back to the 70’s for what was likely the soundtrack to many a session of “7 Minutes in Heaven” in 1974. Clocking in at just over 7 minutes it’s hard to picture this track on the same record as the funk tour-de-force of the title track.
5. The Escape Club – Wild, Wild West (from Wild Wild West)
Cliché in just about every respect from the faux reggae breakdown to the super compressed guitar over the electronic drum beat to the innuendo laced lyrics you could not escape this tune in the late 80’s and well into the early 90’s. Released in 1988 the track reached Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November and lingered on radio playlists for damned near a decade. Oh and the video, how could I forget the video…
Well we started in the East and ended in the West with a whole lot of Heaven in between, what’s bringing balance to your day?
