Friday Five : ˈfrī-(ˌ)dā,-dē ˈfīv : On the sixth day of every week I hit the shuffle button on my iTunes and share my five and drop a little knowledge and insight for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, sometimes there isn’t. Sometimes we have guest, but most of the time it’s just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up your media player of choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments.

The Five:

Editor’s Note: With barely time to listen to five tracks today I’m presenting an abbreviated shuffle. Once a few of you chime in I’ll add your content to the post… that’s right we’re crowd-sourcing this week’s five!! – Michael

Wesley Willis Fiasco – “Girls on Film” (from The Duran Duran Tribute Album, 1997)

Van Halen – “Runaround” (from For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, 1991)

Prince – “Te Amo Corazón” (from 3121, 2006)

Beastie Boys – “Body Movin’” (from Hello Nasty, 1998)

Dog Eat Dog – “Games (feat. Ronnie James Dio)” (from Play Games, 1996)

Who’s got the next Five?

Matt from Addicted to Vinyl:

Elton John – “Can I Put You On” (from 11-17-70)
Bruce Hornsby – “Dreamland”
Caroline’s Spine – “Deep In Your Wake”
Eddie Vedder – “No Ceiling”
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – “Yer So Bad”

Bill C

Kelly Willis – “Fading Fast”

Kelly Willis is one of the country’s best country singers. If you are not familiar with her, I highly recommend you do so.
Steve Earle – “She’s a Mover”

I am not a big Steve Earle fan (I always felt I should like him more than I do) but this is a great cover.
Beatles – “I Am Happy Just to Dance With You”

Enough said.
Marshall Tucker Band – “Can’t You See” (Live)

OK, I admit it. I love MTB, and a host of other southern rock bands from the ’70s. This is a great version of a great song.
The Yardbirds – “Certain Girl”

Yes, the same song that Warren Zevon later made famous. Great song.

Keep em coming!

Hopefully this makes up for Michael not having time to do a write up.

Here we go. Sittin here watching my tivo of the Prez cup wondering why golfers have to have it perfectly quiet to hit a ball and baseball players can have a 100 mile curve ball coming at them with 50K heckling them.

    1) Sofa #1 by Michael Hedges from Oracle —- all I can say is if you have never listened please find some Hedges. My favorite guitarist of all time.

    2) Oh Boy ! by Buddy Holly from Greatest Hits — Buddy was a perfect songwriter in a time where writing songs was not easy. If you ever in Lubbock TX go see the hall of fame.

    3) Tarragon by Vic Chesnutt from About to Choke —- I love this fella and this is his best album in my opinion. For those who dont know, he has a muscular disease and has a hard time playing guitar. His songwriting is great. Get this album and listen close.

    4) Kids by MGMT from Oracular Spectacular — great song from a cool band. Opened for Beck at a show this year and I fell in love. The should have a great future in an industry that a great future is a little suspect.

    5) One More Night by Dob Dylan from Nashville Skyline — this is my favorite Bob voice !!!! Get to see him in a few weeks. Dont know what I will do in a world without him !!

    have a great weekend

    1. The Very Best – Dinosaur on the Ark.
From the mixtape. The album proper is one of my faves this year.

    2. Battles – Leyendecker
It’s been too long since I’ve listened to this album. Better rectify that soon.

    3. LCD Soundsystem – Daft Punk is Playing at My House
    Modern classic!

    4. Jucifer – Centralia
Not my favorite Jucifer song, nor my favorite Jucifer album. Their last few have been OK, but pale to their first few discs.

    5. Battles – Rainbow
    It must be a sign!

    Happy Weekend, folks…

    1. “Keep the Car Running” – Arcade Fire / great start to a 3 day weekend. There are advantages to working for a bank!
    2. “To Be Alone With You” – Bob Dylan / Two Nashville Skyline tunes on this week’s 5 (Larry had the other).
    3. “All In Love Is Fair” – Stevie Wonder / Gorgeous tune. I don’t need to hear covers. Give me the original.
    4. “Do It All Night” – Prince / Live stuff from the City Lights NY boot.
    5. “Monkey and the Engineer” – Grateful Dead / Reckoning is one of the coolest live collections I own. Jerry, Bobby and the boys, acoustic and clicking on all cylinders.

Pete, here is my Friday Five. How it was generated is cool. Because I am in London, I can use Spotify. Aren’t familiar with it? It is an excellent online streaming service. Have a look: http://bit.ly/38Y0tW

I used Spotify radio to generate my FFive. I set the radio station to “rock, blues, soul, pop” and highlighted 1960’s – 1980’s. The mix I got was a mad collection of distant cousins and rank strangers. Here goes:

    1. Ace Frehley: “Wipe Out” off his solo album from the Kiss solo album set in the late 70’s (or early 80’s…I forget). I was a Kiss freak wen I was in the 5th & 6th grade. Ace’s solo album was my fave. I still tell my wife our first kid will be named Ace (still have some work to do there).

    2. Thompson Twins: “King for a Day”. I have NEVER heard this song…and may never again. This is not my bag, but if you like a heathly dose of synth, drum machine and kettle bells…its for you!

    3. Jimi Hendrix: “51st Anniversary”. Well, that makes sense in a FFive…you never know what’s next. Thomson Twins into Hendrix. I feel better now…synth music is a distant memory.

    4. Tom Petty: “The Waiting”. Ah, now we are getting somewhere. When I release my first album, the jacket cover will be a picture of me in a record store looking at “Hard Promises”.

Ok, sorry, I have to laugh before #5. Never would have thought this would come out of my speakers.

    5. Peabo Bryson: “Falling for You”. What can I say…a nice smooth 80’s groove that feels like it should be coming out of the juke box on the wall at my local Papa Gino’s circa 1984.

So there you have it…the Spotify Friday Frive from London.

    1) Willie Nelson: “Opportunity to Cry.” From his unplugged “IRS Tapes” disc. Great verse: “You gave your word, now I return it to you / With a suggestion as to what you can do / Just exchange the words ‘I love you’ for ‘Goodbye’ / While I take this opportunity to cry.”

    2) Triumph: “Hooked on You.” From their Sport of Kings album. Not a favorite. One of their RAWK songs. Goddamn, but they try to make it sound cool, don’t they?

    3) Robert Wyatt: “Little Red Robin Hood Hit the Road.” WTF? From my occasional depressed forays into prog rock. Wyatt’s got a sense of humor, though, unlike many of his proggy peers.

    4) Journey: “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Ah, that’s more like it. The other night, I bought and watched the band’s Live in Manila DVD, and marveled at how good they still sound with Arnel Pineda running around, slapping hands, and, oh yeah, singing his fucking ass off. You look at Neal Schon a couple times on this thing, and his expression is a combination of “What’s that little dude gonna get into next” and “I am so incredibly lucky to still be doing this right now.”

    5) Queen: “Hammer to Fall.” My favorite moment from Live Aid was Freddie Mercury doing his operatic call and response with the crowd, then going “Hey-hey-hey, ‘Hammer to Fall’!” At which point Brian May kicked into the mighty riff for this great late-period Queen track. Taught my kid to do the call and response thing when he was two. I’ve tried to be a cool dad. Really, I have.
