    Robert Plant’s Nine Lives

    robert plant

If there’s a Robert Plant freak in your life, odds are he or she picked this up on its release date last Tuesday (Nov. 21st). But if not, do I have the Christmas present for you (or Hannukah, or whatever, you understand, ya?)…

It’s another great project from our friends at Rhino, a box set including all nine of Plant’s solo albums, remastered and expanded with previously unreleased bonus tracks. Dubbed Nine Lives, it also has a DVD with all of his music videos, a comprehensive interview, and rare footage. All for under $100.00.

I’ve always enjoyed Plant’s solo material. I was partial to his 80’s material until last year’s Mighty Rearranger, an A+ Robert Plant album mixing all sorts of musical styles, from funky to polyrhythmic to bluesy. Well, here’s your opportunity to have ’em all, from Pictures at Eleven to Mighty Rearranger.

And now, a nice treat to coincide with the Nine Lives release. The one time I saw Robert Plant was in Milwaukee on the Now and Zen tour in 1988. It was a great show, mixing his solo stuff with great renditions of some Zep classics (e.g. “In the Evening”, “Trampled Underfoot”). I came across this Philly Spectrum show from the same tour (recorded from a radio broadcast). This took place about a week before I saw him in Milwaukee, so it was a nice find.

New from the Clash, Sort of

    cs

Well not really, but two members of the Clash have some interesting projects going. I’ve spoken before of Mick Jones’ collaboration with Tony James, named Carbon/Silicon. They keep pumping out fresh and free material via their web site.

Here’s one that’s pretty damn catchy, and appeals to my I.T. geek-ness.

Carbon/Silicon: The Network’s Going Down – this and many many more full mp3’s available from this page on their web site. I’ve heard rumblings of a U.S. tour, which would be very very cool.

    cover

Also active again in the music arena is Clash bassist Paul Simonon. I read about his latest project in the latest Rolling Stone. Made up of former Blur & Gorillaz front man Damon Albarn, former Verve guitarist Simon Tong, Simonon, and former Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen. And produced by Brian Burton, AKA Danger Mouse (the hipster favorite who, with Cee-Lo, makes up Gnarls Barkley – “Crazy” never did anything for me, by the way). Cool lineup, huh?

I’ll have to post some Fela Kuti soon. For those who haven’t heard of him, he was a Nigerian musician / political activist who popularized Afrobeat in the 60’s and 70’s. Find out more about him here. I’ll put a post together soon, though. Shame on me for not posting Fela sooner.

Back to the eclectic project. The album, titled The Good The Bad and The Queen, will be released in January. The first single, “Herculean”, is already available in the UK. As for the band name, Rolling Stone says they’re still nameless, but it appears by their web site and MySpace page that they’re calling themselves The Good The Bad and The Queen too.

As for the single, it’s nothing mind-blowing to me personally, but given the lineup, I’m willing to give it a healthy dose of listens and let it seep in. My musical resume doesn’t include a lot of Blur or Danger Mouse, and just a little bit of Gorillaz. Recommendations?

    A Black Crowes Giveaway

    crowes

It’s high time for another Ickmusic giveaway! Yow!! The promotional gods have bequeathed upon me some cool goodies. Rhino has struck again with 2 cool Black Crowes releases. Here’s a snippet from the press release:

LOS ANGELES – Twice The Black Crowes have recorded albums that were never officially released: Tall in 1993 and Band in 1997. While a few songs from these lost albums were rerecorded and released on studio albums, many have emerged only through the band’s legendary live shows. The Black Crowes recently went into the vault, collecting the best moments from those abandoned sessions for a special treat for their longtime fans. Titled THE LOST CROWES, it is a two-disc set of unreleased music that has been remixed for its public debut on Rhino….

The Black Crowes released its first home video, WHO KILLED THAT BIRD OUT ON YOUR WINDOW SILL, in 1992 while touring for the band’s sophomore album. Rhino Home Video will release a remastered and expanded version of the video on DVD that features live performances, interviews, backstage and studio footage, videos from the group’s first two albums, and additional bonus features. [read the full Press Release doc]

You can check out this Crowes eCard to listen to some tracks off the CD’s, check out the track listing, and buy the CD and/or the DVD. The handful of tracks I’ve heard (“A Conspiracy”, “p.25 London”) make me not want to give away the CD, but give it away I will!

Ah, but there is a caveat. You must work for your winnings. Here’s the question to ponder: Chris Robinson, lead singer of the Crowes, recently broke it off with actress Kate Hudson after several years of marriage. The rumor mill has it that she got a little too friendly with actor Owen Wilson on the set of their latest movie. So the scenario is this… it’s a late Saturday night in a smoky L.A. bar, and Owen is wrapping up a game of pool. In walks Chris, who shuffles up to the bar, orders a shot of whiskey and a bottle of beer. He sees Owen across the bar and starts to amble over. Lo and behold, Owen’s playing pool with Kurt Russell, Chris’s former daddy in law.

    kurt russell

Words are exchanged, and before you know it, Russell and Wilson jump Chris like two vicious street hoods. Slash (formerly of Guns n Roses) sees what’s happening, and jumps in to help Chris.

Oh, it’s on now. Chris Robinson and Slash are squaring off in a barroom brawl with Owen Wilson and Kurt Russell. Magic question: who wins the fight? Leave a comment below. Any details, like instruments used, special kung-fu moves, etc. are welcome. My favorite will win the CD, DVD, and collector’s edition Black Crowes matchbox.

The Pogues Reissued and Rocking the Swedes

    pogues

Well the weekend is almost upon us again, and what better way to start it than with some Pogues reissue news and a live show from their prime? Rhino keeps impressing me with the choices of their expanded reissues of great albums. This time, they take on the Pogues, with five expanded and remastered albums: Red Roses for Me (their debut), Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash (produced by Elvis Costello), If I Should Fall from Grace with God and Peace & Love (both produced by Steve Lillywhite), and Hell’s Ditch (produced by Joe Strummer).

Each one has 5-6 bonus tracks tacked on to the end. I got my hands on If I Shoul Fall…, which is such a great ride all the way through, highlighted by the great “Fairytale of New York” with Shane MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl, “Turkish Song of the Damned”, and the title track. The bonus tracks are great here too, “Mountain Dew” (with the Dubliners), “Sketches of Spain”, “South Australia”, and the “Battle March Medley”, among others. And who wrote the liner notes? Steve Earle. He recounts 4 straight nights of playing with the Pogues in very entertaining fashion.

So here’s a Pogues set from 1985. It was either soon before or soon after their 1985 album (and second album) Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash was released. Download, grab a pint and enjoy.

Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me

    cure

I’ve never been a Cure nut, but something about their 1987 album, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, caught my ear around that time. I was working at Camelot Music in a Racine, Wisconsin mall before I went off to college in Colorado, and I used to play the new releases I found interesting. It’s the cover that made me open it and take a listen, and I’m glad I did. It turned into one of those albums I’ll always associate with that time.. being 18 years old, still seeing the high school sweetheart, and shipping off to school out of state.

So Rhino has introduced the Cure Deluxe Reissue Series, which is made up of albums the Cure put out between 1984-1987: Kiss Me, The Top, and The Head on the Door. Each album has an extra disc of rare outtakes and demos. The extra disk didn’t do too much for me, but I can imagine how great it would be for a Cure superfan. But it was great to hear this great album remastered, and damn, I still love that cover!

Drivin’ All Night: Heart and Soul, Part Three

    bruce

There’s a reason this concert’s nickname is Heart and Soul. “Heart and Soul” is an important component of “Drive All Night”, probably my favorite Bruce ballad of all time. “HEEEAAAAARRRRT and SOUUUL / HEAAAAAARRRRT and SOUUUL”. It’s an intimate, heartfelt, and very powerful tune, and that’s just the studio version. Just wait til you hear this live version. Once you’re catching your breath after hearing “Drive All Night”, they’re diving right iinto a breathtaking “Backstreets”. No mercy, I tell ya.

Enjoy the final part of the show. Who out there agrees with me on ‘Drive All Night”? Is this not the best version you’ve ever heard? What’d y’all think of the show?

    Heart and Soul, Part Two

    bruce

Happy Monday, folks. This should start the week off right. It’s part two of Heart & Soul, with the Boss and band ripping into mostly material from The River. My favorite parts in this section are “Here She Comes” into an amazing version of “I Wanna Marry You”. I’ve always loved this song, and to hear Bruce’s intensity and passion in the vocals here makes the song so much better. And for someone who is partial to sides 3 and 4 of The River, you don’t get better than great live versions of “Wreck on the Highway”, “Stolen Car”, “Point Blank”, “Crush on You” and “Ramrod.”

Enjoy part two of this great show. Part three is coming up in a couple of days.

Happy Birthday Boss: Heart and Soul, Part One

    bruce

Ickmusic sends out a happy 57th birthday to the Boss today. We have a week to go until the Seeger Sessions tour resumes in Italy for a nice little European tour (lucky bastards). So to mark the occasion, let’s celebrate by going back to 1980, and listening to a great show from the River tour as they descended upon ASU.

This is a 3 parter (and 3 discs), so stay tuned this week for parts two and three. Part 3 , by the way, has THE best version of “Drive All Night” I have ever heard.

    Enjoy!

    Tattoo You Side 2

I had a nice “terrestrial radio” moment today. Since I signed up for Sirius Satellite Radio almost a year and a half ago, my non-satellite radio moments are pretty much limited to the parking garage at work (because I lose my signal). So it was a nice surprise when I turned on Phoenix station KDKB (tag line: “Everything that Rocks”), just when they fired up side 2 of the Stones’ Tattoo You uninterrupted. It was perfect: “Worried About You” started when I turned on my car; “Tops”, “Heaven”, “Ain’t No Use in Crying” took me all the way to the freeway exit, and “Waiting on a Friend” finished when I was pulling into my neighborhood. Magic I tell you.

This was the album that was out when the Stones entered my consciousness in 1981, thanks to my older brother. It wasn’t until a few years later that I began to unearth the wonder found in the Stones catalog. What a musical discovery: Tattoo You, Exile on Main Street, Sticky Fingers, the two Hot Rocks albums, It’s Only Rock and Roll, Black and Blue, Some Girls, Emotional Rescue, Beggars Banquet. Those albums were my introduction to the Stones.

Hearing side two of Tattoo You reminded me about the timeless quality of their music. People can joke all they want about the sixty something Stones touring today, but the fact is their music is as fresh and relevant as ever.

Side one of Tattoo You gives you the driving rock of “Start Me Up”, “Hang Fire”, and “Little T&A”. But when side two hits, it’s time to mellow out, sit back, and take in some down tempo classics from the Glimmer Twins.

Just like I discovered the music of the Stones in my mid teens, so too will countless teenagers today. Never close yourself off from the great music of the past based solely on today’s stereotypes. There would be no Killers, Strokes, Hives and all the other darlings of today’s music scene without the Rolling Stones.

And as far as the perfect tune to listen to after breaking it off with your sweetie, you don’t get any better than “Waiting on a Friend”… “Dont need a whore / dont need no booze / Dont need a virgin priest / But I need someone I can cry to / I need someone to protect…”. And a Sonny Rollins saxophone solo to boot? Sheesh….

And here’s the Video for “Worried About You”….
