Marah and Steve Earle play the TLA

One of the best concert weeks of my life was seeing Steve Earle play the West Hollywood House of Blues in the summer of 2000 with Marah as their opening act. A week later, I saw Marah at the small, sweat soaked Long Wongs in Tempe, AZ. Marah was hitting the road behind their great album ‘Kids in Philly’, which was released on Steve’s label, E Squared.

Thanks to Steve Earle, I became a big Marah fan, and remain so today (just saw them as they came through Phoenix in January).

In October of 1999, it was Marah’s coming out of sorts, as they joined Steve at a benefit for the Kensington Welfare Rights Union, playing the Theater of the Living Arts in Philadelphia, PA.

    The Clash hit France

There are a few recurring themes on this site that I unapologetically hammer at the masses. There’s Prince, there’s Springsteen, and there is Joe Strummer & The Clash. I came across a cool bootleg recently of what I guess would be called Sandanista-era Clash.

This May 9, 1981 show came five months after the release of their ambitious, extremely eclectic 3-LP juggernaut that was (and is) ‘Sandanista’. The album review on All Music has it just about right:

The Clash sounded like they could do anything on London Calling. For its triple-album follow-up, Sandinista!, they tried to do everything, adding dub, rap, gospel, and even children’s choruses to the punk, reggae, R&B, and roots rock they already were playing. Instead of presenting a band with a far-reaching vision, like London Calling did, Sandinista! plays as a messy, confused jumble, which means that its numerous virtues are easy to ignore.

While it doesn’t come close to the brilliance and magnitude of London Calling, it does have its moments (“The Call Up”, “The Magnificent Seven”, “Washington Bullets”, etc.), but it is a triple album of 36 songs for cryin’ out loud, so there’s bound to be some less than stellar moments (like a reworked “Career Opportunities” sung by children).

So anyhoo, the bootleg was recorded live in France. It’s great quality, and really captures their F**ing brilliance….

I pulled out this old Eric Johnson CD tonight, threw it on, and began to feel very inadequate, because the Fender Stratocaster standing up in the adjoining room will never ever make sounds like the ones coming from Eric’s Strat in this oh so fine showcase of his guitar playing….

    Going Global with Joe

    Joe Strummer

Dick Rude, a long time friend of Joe Strummer, is releasing an hour long movie on DVD this summer entitled ‘Let’s Rock Again!’.

The one-hour film was shot over the last 18 months of Joe’s life. “It has been my blessing to share with the world an intimate portrait of such a passionate and humble man,” Rude said in a statement “Joe was a true hero. His music changed people’s lives. His love affected me profoundly. I am proud of the story he has allowed me to tell, but I would trade it all in a heartbeat to have him back.” Let’s Rock Again! opens with a montage of Clash-era footage of Strummer before ultimately settling into his stint fronting the Mescaleros. The film includes some stunning live performance footage and both frank and amusing interviews with Joe. (- from Strummersite.com)

Here’s a preview tune from the movie, a Mescaleros live version of “Global a Go-Go”. Hop on over to Stummersite for more info on the movie, and other Joe / Mescaleros stuff.

A Longer Dose of Computer Blues

    from Purple Rain

Well, if you’ve been reading Ickmusic, you know that I like-a-da little Prince man. And you might know that his latest ALBUM, 3121, is unleashed to the world this Tuesday, March 21st. So do yourself a favor, listen to a couple of tunes by the man, then head over to Amazon to buy 3121. Cool? Cool.

A couple of relative rarities for you. First off, a couple of gems from ‘Purple Rain’. If you’ve ever heard the album, which most of us over say, 30, have, then you’ve heard “Computer Blue” segue into “Darling Nikki”. But did you know there’s a whole ‘nother section of “Computer Blue” that was edited out of the album. Well color you purple, go on and listen to it…

Prince & the Revolution: Computer Blue (extended), Darling Nikki (mp3)

And then check out this outtake from the Oscar-worthy (cough cough) film soundtrack, Graffiti Bridge.

    Prince: The Grand Progression (mp3)

Buy 3121 (and any and all other Prince albums) at Amazon.

And my old buddy Chris in Miami is seeing the man live this Saturday night. Chris, you best post a review here afterwards…

    The New Cars

    Candy-O

Here’s news. The Cars are reuniting! Well, sort of. The New Cars, as they’re called, is without Ric Ocasek, drummer David Robinson, and bassist Benjamin Orr, who, sadly, died of cancer in 2000. Only two original members return: keyboardist Greg Hawkes and fellow lefty guitarist Elliot Easton. But an interesting (and surprising) replacement for Ocasek… Todd Rundgren. Former Tubes drummer Prairie Prince on drums and bassist Kasim Sulton round out the group.

The New Cars debuted on Jay Leno tonight, performing “Let the Good Times Roll”. Pretty spirited performance, Rundgren fits in well. And Greg Hawke, the uber geek keyboard player, has white hair!! I’m getting old.

So here it is, along with one of my favorite Cars album segueways…

The New Cars: Let the Good Times Roll (mp3) – from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, 3/14/06

The Cars: Shoo be Doo / Candy-O (mp3) – from ‘Candy-O‘, buy it on Amazon.

P.S. I tried finding the official site of the New Cars, but didn’t feel like sifting through 50 Google pages of auto sites. See the comments for links to their web sites.

    • (MC) Hammer has a new blog. Here’s his latest entry:

This week I ‘m going to hit the weights some more and perfect a few new moves I’ve been working on. This is a good time of year to workout. The weather is warming up and summer is ninety days away. I got ahead because I danced for the last six months and now I’m lean. Still, I like my muscles hard because it helps me execute my moves with more power. I train specifically for dancing. I do full body days. Three days in a row. I work my chest and lower back and abs a lot. No heavy weight. I have to be able to explode and be quick and fast with my hands and feet. My calves and thighs are most important for the hot moves out today. Squats with no weights will do the trick. I will also do some leg presses with about three hundred pounds just to keep the thighs and hamstrings firing.

I stay about ten days from show ready, so working out and staying fit is a must plus I love it! I’ve already been performing and perfecting the live versions of at least ten of the new songs and I’m itchy!! They play great. My dancers and I love the freedom of the new music. We only lock up on the choruses, the rest of the song you have to freestyle with power. I’m off to the gym.

    • And as you can maybe see from the image above, Eddie Van Halen has seen better days. But lest we forget, he is the man responsible for these sounds. I will never ever tire of hearing this….

    Marah Live Video

Thanks to Zack from the great city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, we have video from Marah’s performance at Mad Planet in Milwaukee last week. Here they are singing “Barstool Boys” from their fantabulous 2000 release, ‘Kids in Philly’. Dave and Serge Bielanko are in vintage rock star form, and as a bonus, you get some quality Serge stage banter.

    Prince Unleashes his Fury

Okay, IckMusic has admittedly turned into a Prince blog the last several days. Juuust one more post and I’ll move on (maybe). There have been several requests for the mp3 to Prince’s new tune “Fury”. I can’t supply you with a link to buy the studio version yet because there apparently isn’t one available. If anyone comes across the song for sale, please let me know and I’ll get a link up here right away.

    For now, a couple things:

Go pre-order 3121, which comes out on March 21st.

And here is an mp3 from Saturday night:

Prince on SNL: New Song “Fury”

Here’s Prince’s first song last night on SNL. The name of the song is “Fury”. It’s a barnburner. Scorching guitar solos, dancing chicks. WOW….the ending is priceless.
